As a Sport Scientist and Associate Professor at the University of Alberta, Michael’s past research and academic interests in Sport Science include; pace strategy and critical velocity modeling and the unique attributes of integrative oxygen delivery during exercise in elite endurance athletes.
Michael’s current research focus is on environmental and training related factors influencing lung function in athletes. His triathlon related work includes “bike body positioning on performance (Book chapter: Applied Ergonomics of Cycling Performance https://www.routledgehandbooks.com/doi/10.4324/9780203123355.ch10)” and “determination of training stress and fatigue status in swimmers”.
His sport science practice has included the sports of swimming, nordic skiing, triathlon, basketball, cycling and rowing with special expertise in working with overtrained athletes. Michael delivered a talk to 80 of the best Canadian Nordic coaches from across Canada on “Risky Business: How does training and competition affect respiratory health in cold weather athletes…”.
